Sophomore Year

 

Emphasis:

Knowing Yourself and Career Exploration

Topics:

Identify personal interests, values, skills and abilities using through individual counseling with Ms. Thorngren

Link academic strengths and personal interests to potential careers

Activities:

Evaluate the career portion of the PLAN Test

Become familiar with career development services

Conduct informational interviews with teachers

Complete parent/student interest inventory

Job Shadow one or more professionals

 

For Sophomores, the program offers individual counseling and the opportunity for students to job shadow with or interview professionals in the community. In this experience, students spend a typical day with a professional and gain personal insight about a potential career. Last year over fifty students were placed with professionals in the Chicago area. Individual students were able to spend an entire day with professionals in law, construction, medicine, aviation, theater, advertising and finance. One of the keys to the success of the Job Shadowing Program is the enthusiastic participation of New Trier parents who are willing to host a student at their work site.

Junior Year

Career Exploration

Topics:

Investigate future trends of specific careers 

Learn about required education, training and certifications for various careers through individual counseling with Ms. Thorngren

Activities:

Use Career Center resources to link careers, majors and college

Listen to professionals share their expertise and recognize the link between academics and careers attending career fairs (Program Events) and annual Classroom to Career Day - April

Job Shadow one or more professionals

For Juniors, the Career Development Program offers several opportunities for students to learn about specific careers through professional speakers in the classroom and career fairs (Program Events). In addition to these activities, the Career Center is readily available for students to access information about colleges, internships and careers. Students are able to use the Career Center software to link potential careers with college majors and schools that offer a particular course of study. Students are also encouraged to continue to take advantage of the counseling services with Ms. Thorngren. during their junior year.

Senior Year

 

Emphasis:

Setting goals

Goals:

Set short and long-term goals

Learn how to articulate personal strengths and interests

Investigate a potential career through Senior Project (a month long work-related experience)

Activities:

Consider personal strengths, aspirations and opportunities to create an effective path to attaining goals Make appointment to see  Ms. Thorngren for career counseling in conjunction with college counseling.

Take advantage of interviewing and resume writing workshops

Attend career events (Program Events)

Participate in the Senior Project

For Seniors, the Career Development Program provides opportunities for students to learn how to integrate their academic and personal strengths with their post-high school plans. Resume writing and interviewing workshops are offered during senior year to help students prepare for college interviews, internships and Senior Project. Seniors are encouraged to continue their career exploration through participation in the five-week Senior Project, a hands-on work experience in May.
