The Career Development Program provides New Trier students with counseling services and career exploration. The program is intended to complement the work of each student’s advisor and post-high school counselor with steps to guide them through self-analysis, career exploration and educational goal setting. This is achieved through:
- Three individual counseling sessions with Ms. Susie Thorngren
- Excursions to career fairs in various fields including health care, media and communications, engineering, architecture and marketing
- Job shadowing with professionals in the community
- Career Services Orientation with sophomore advisories
- Resume writing and interviewing workshops
- Summer school program exploring careers in engineering business management and information technology, or health care
- Guidance for internships and Senior Project
- Interpretation of career assessment results (including the PLAN test)
The College/Career Center, located in Room 230 (adjacent to Post-High School Counseling) is New Trier’s comprehensive resource site for:
- College and university information including catalogs, applications, viewbooks and brochures, and general reference material
- Financial aid and internship information and applications
- Visits from admissions representatives from post-secondary institutions in the U.S. and Canada
- College/Career Center Orientation with junior advisories
- Academic, volunteer or adventure-oriented summer program information
- Career and occupation information
- College board test preparation information
- U.S. military opportunity information
- Circulating collection of videos, CD’s, and books on colleges and careers
- Part-time or temporary job postings
Students use websites and software on the ten available computers to:
- Conduct college or career interest and abilities inventories
- Utilize the inventory results for information on possible occupations connecting to college majors and schools that provide them; or information on schools and majors connecting to possible occupations
- Acquire information on specific colleges or universities and/or complete an online application
- Research or apply for financial aid
